Is it true, as the Buddha said
“Hatred does not end hate
Vengeance does not end revenge
Only love ends hate
Only forgiveness ends revenge”
Last year we held a service focusing on forgiveness and inspired by the Buddhist story from which those words come as well as words of poet Seamus Heaney:
“So hope for a great sea change
On the far side of revenge
Believe that a further shore
Is reachable from heref
Believe in miracles
And cures and healing wells”
We will continue in the same vein, taking as our texts a poem by Thich Nhat Hanh, “Please Call Me By My True Names”, and a story by Roy Brown Eagle “Before There Was Time”. Together we will create the sermon through our responses to these and to our own questions about forgiveness.
