SCUU Banner Connection -- How To Be A Sugarloaf Requester

Thu, 12/10/2015

If we updated our banner and used it as a sail on the ship that we use to sail to our new destination it might look like this ...
The Volunteer System allows us to make helpful connections.
How To Be A Sugarloaf Requester:
Look at those who are long term volunteers being committee members.  I see these folks as committed to our ministry for the duration of their terms.  Now, look at those whose ministry is to be there to support committee members throughout the Volunteer System’s trial period (the Go ‘Rounders.)  That period ends with the congregational vote at our May annual meeting on whether or not to have a volunteer system.
Any committee member qualifies as a Requester.Step 1 is when a committee member finds a need to have a one-time task done.  Julie B. from the E-Task Force needed a volunteer substitute for Laura to do the Weekly Digest.Step 2 is when Julie asked Helen who is available for that temporary job.  Rosie was the one.Step 3 is when Julie gave a personal invitation with a full job description to Rosie.Step 4 is when the two women buddied-up with mentoring and technical help to accomplish the task.  (The arrangement was so satisfying that Rosie went ahead and was editor for seven issues!  Obviously, this is not the usual example of the “One task- One time’ stipulation of the Volunteer System.)Step 5 is when gratitude is shown to the volunteer for completion of the task.Step 6 is when the Manager was notified (Helen, with Jeff substituting from Jan. 10 till March 10, by the Requester, Julie, that Rosie  had completed the job.  Note:  An additional adjustment to the System was when Rosie decided to bank her credits for later use and stay active as a volunteer (on the Go ‘Round list of five folks, at this point.)
The Go ‘Rounders are each committed to doing one task per month during the Volunteer System trial period.   So far, these wonderful folks have found new knowledge and awareness of Sugarloaf’s inner workings when giving their monthly boosts toward achieving committee goals for our sustainability on our land.

Volunteer System Update #10

Fri, 11/13/2015

What’s the difference of being in the new Sugarloaf Volunteer System or of being the usual all-churchyear-long committee member, for instance? Our new kind of volunteers are on a list (“Go ‘Round”) to take turns for being asked to do a one-time task per month (including those who choose to use the Action Box.) To review Action Box use for postponing when a volunteer wants to begin belonging to the System, see Updates #5 and #9.

The committee kind of volunteer has an important role for making the new one-time tasks get done. Requestor is the name of this role. If you look at the piano’s bulletin board in the Great Room, you’ll see a depiction of what Requestors do.

Anyone on a committee is, also, able to be a Requestor and can use the Go ‘Round List to call somebody to help with a facet of the committee work. Suppose the Worship Committee finds no member can run off the next Sunday’s copies of the order of service. One committee member calls the Manager (Helen) to get the names of those who have not had a turn volunteering for the month and invites one of them to run off the orders of service. The Requestor serves as a mentor to support the volunteer in succeeding with the one-time task, if needed.

So, now that we have use of the Action Box for those who join the System at a later date. Now that we have eliminated the Call Later category (thus, entirely, leaving it up to the volunteer to notify the Manager, by way of the Action Box, when the time is right for beginning to contribute to Sugarloaf’s sustainability that way), all of us can participate. There will be no Opt-outs because there will be no pressure to join the Volunteer System. There will be no pressure from anyone else’s timing.

Therefore, with the Action Box, you have a means for postponing when you decide to give our Volunteer System a try.

We do hope, however, that whatever is stopping anyone from being able to sign up right now, will become resolved enough so the person is able to get in enough experience with the System before our annual May meeting when we fully discuss and vote on it.

Our Volunteer System is how we ALL can, easily, get into the Sugarloaf flow. Gratification and gratitude give a springboard for enjoying a spiritual experience, the sacred circle of receiving and giving. Sugarloaf is a positive energy generator.

Unity of purpose – yes … burnout – No!

Volunteer System Update #9

Fri, 11/06/2015

When our annual May meeting comes, will we want to have a Sugarloaf Volunteer System? The trial sail changes, changes, changes, changes are giving us a slow and zigzag course forward toward the time when we vote. Hopefully all who are eligible will have tried out the system before that vote.

The change about the Action Box use and the elimination of the Call Later category for the SignUp Genius choices are important changes to note by those who are becoming “Opt-Outs”.

Yes, the Opt-Outs are, now, at the “end of your ropes and tying knots to hang on”. However, you folks can make use of the Action Box when these tough periods in your lives have quieted down enough. So, dear Opt-Outs, the Action Box (see Update #6) is sitting on the Great Room stairs’ bottom landing silently waiting for when you see a need to help out by doing a One-Time Task. It’s worth a try in order to make an informed decision when we vote.

When you feel ready, your card that you put in the Action Box (with instructions inside Box) will alert the System Manager (Helen). When your task is completed, she will call you to learn if you choose to activate your registration in the Go ‘Round list (see Update #5.) If your one completed task is all you can do, you will not activate being registered and not be called again.

Therefore, with the Action Box, you have a means for postponing when you decide to give our Volunteer System a try.

Now during the trial, our people are giving one-time boosts to help those who are committed to doing ongoing churchwork all year (usually with committee work.) Belonging to the Sugarloaf One-Time Task Boosters is gratifying.

Volunteer System Update #8

Thu, 10/29/2015

‘Tis time to recall Sugarloaf’s larger picture - our 2015 Priorities Survey decision making! A top priority is to increase rentals. Yes, we have Faith in charge of the business end, but, also, what is needed is to have us pitching in to help her. Our “Harry Homeowner” tasks for keeping our property appealing and ready for renters to pay us for its use requires tending to ongoing upkeep details. If you grab a broom and sweep the hickory nuts off the deck, that One-time Task counts for a volunteer credit. Tell Helen and she’ll check you off for the month you do that task in. Drop a card in the Action Box. (See Updater #5.)

OK, Step One is to register on the SignUp Genius. If you don’t want a suggested One-Time Task, choose the first choice (to use the Action Box.) Update #5 gives you that information. Jeff can resend you his email for using the SignUp Genius if you need that boost. Jeffb1245@gmail.com Also, to sign up for the Action Box use, means you put your card in the box when you are ready to join Sugarloaf’s Volunteer System. The Box will be checked every Sunday until May 1st when the trial period ends.

We don’t have many eligible volunteers who are not now performing ongoing tasks for the church year.

Which, when you think about it, is an amazing thing. Our volunteerism rate is very high.

Right now, we need four more to use the SignUp Genius.  We all have a desire for Sugarloaf’s sustainability on our very special property.

Unity of purpose – yes … burnout – No!

Volunteer System Update #7

Thu, 10/22/2015

Sunday’s Next Steps meeting brought out the need to list our trial period’s System changes and points to emphasize for those eligible to be One-time Task Volunteers:

  1. The One-time tasks are done by those of us who are not, now, ongoing volunteers, i.e. being on a committee.
  2. There are 2 One-time Task groups:
    • First are those who want an invitation and have chosen on the SignUp Genius site any of the choices other than the first one.
    •  Second are those who sign-up for the self-directed/self-initiated choice that tops the SignUp Genius listing. This second group uses the Action Box and will do so when ready to join the One-time Task Volunteers. (Please, see Update #6 on the WOW blog homepage for Action Box details. Also, there are instructions inside the Action Box.)
  3. All One-time Task volunteers are expected to do only one task per month (Usually that is when all on the Volunteers’ List have had a turn. That turn-taking is called a Go-‘Round. If one Go-‘Round takes longer than a month, then the wait between turns is longer. Our Volunteer System’s basic tenet is FAIRNESS. (Please, see Update #5 for Go-‘Round details.)
  4. All completed One-time Tasks earn one credit each time. The monthly one can have more than one facet of work. Those extra facets would earn extra credits. For instance, Kirsten was the point person for two planning meetings for the recent OWL Retreat. In addition, she researched and supplied important information when working with the organizer to provide prep information to the participants. Therefore, Kirsten completed three separate tasks, was checked off for her turn in September, plus earning two credits. Those extra credits free Kirsten from not having to do turns in October and November. When doing a One-time Task, you may do additional connected work on the project and earn more credits to give you a longer waiting period for taking a new turn.

Our trial period (September 13 – May 1) needs to have all not in an ongoing volunteer position to use the SignUp Genius (Jeff can send you the instructions, again) to make the trial a valid test before we vote on our System at our annual May meeting. Unity of purpose – Yes for sustainability on our land and burn-out – No!
